—PRESS RELEASE—

The all-star exhibit of music photography “California Rocks!,” originally mounted for the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art just in time for the pandemic in 2020, will make a special reprise appearance February 29 through March 30 in the gallery at LightSource.

Curated by former San Francisco Chronicle pop music critic Joel Selvin, the exhibit features landmark music photography by the masters – Jim Marshall, Baron Wolman, Herb Greene, Michael Zagaris, Joel Bernstein, Arthur Rosato and others. The Beatles at Candlestick Park, the Rolling Stones in Hollywood recording studios, Elvis at the S.F. Civic, scenes from the Laurel Canyon days and Haight-Ashbury era – the full panorama of rock music in California as captured by the greatest photographers in the field.

“Everybody pitched in a second time to recreate this wonderful exhibit that we put together in Sonoma only to see it closed after the opening weekend,” said curator Selvin. “It’s especially great to bring it to San Francisco.”

Lightsource maintains a gallery space in their San Francisco studio and creates fine art prints for artists, galleries, museums, collectors, and anyone who loves photography. All the artists involved in “California Rocks!” are clients of the company. Lightsource founder Sam Hoffman, who worked on the Sonoma exhibit, is the proud sponsor of the San Francisco edition.

The photographers in the exhibit represent the height of music photojournalism in the Bay Area. Jim Marshall and Joel Bernstein have long been recognized for famous album cover shots. Marshall earned a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions. Herb Greene and Baron Wolman (the first staff photographer for Rolling Stone) caught the full flamboyance and excitement of Sixties rock. Michael Zagaris, whose epic music photography also goes back to the Fillmore days, further distinguished himself in sports as the long-standing official photographer of the San Francisco 49ers football team and Oakland A’s in baseball.
